February 2010 Issue

On occasion, you may have walked into a room where friends or family were watching a movie. You’re late, but intrigued, so you sit down to watch. You have a hard time trying to understand the basic plotline, because the movie is halfway through. You get completely lost until a commercial comes or the film is paused so a friend can explain what is going on.

We often put the people we are evangelizing to in the same situation. Many times, we begin by confronting them with their sinfulness and their need for a Savior, not realizing that they may not understand the biblical framework or have any realization about the characters or their own part in the story. We make the assumption that people know certain things about Jesus, the Bible and how God has worked in history. In reality, they may be very confused by the message we are trying to communicate. We are dealing with a growing generation of people who know little of the Bible. They have not grown up going to Sunday school and church and are therefore not familiar with many common stories of the Scripture. They probably have heard of God, Jesus, the cross and the resurrection, but have no idea how it fits into the context of the bigger story. With biblical literacy on the decline, it is our desire to put the message of salvation into the context of the larger story (the meta-narrative).

"The Story" is a 12- page visual narrative that was written to share "the story" of God (the meta-narrative). It was designed for the unbeliever and it goes briefly from Genesis to Revelation looking at 4 main points: Creation, the Fall, the Rescue, and the Restoration. It tells the most important story of all time, how God created a perfect world, sin broke perfection. God sent his son Jesus to rescue us and how he wants to restore us now and lead us to the full restoration of a new heaven and earth!
